Gap Analysis
With any perceived training issue, a gap analysis (also referred to as a needs analysis) is advised. It specifies whether the issue at hand is truly a training issue or knowledge gap rather than another issue, such as a performance problem.
The gap analysis includes looking at the current (“as-is”) state of the problem and its current implications. The next step is determining the desired end goal for the issue and the best way to bridge the gap. It is important to root cause the issue from several perspectives, not just through the lense of a skill, knowledge, or training deficit.
Using this approach provides the necessary framework for accurately identifying the problem and gives stakeholders recommendations on how to best achieve desired results.
